What Does a Sand Filter Do?

Sand filters are one of the most essential pool filtration components used to remove turbidity and trap total suspended solids (TSS) in pool water. As water passes through the filter, particles become trapped within the sand bed and clean water returns to the pool. This helps achieve high water quality in terms of both hygiene and appearance.

  • Physically cleans the water and reduces turbidity.
  • Significantly reduces algae formation.
  • Lowers chemical consumption for more economical maintenance.
  • Supports healthy pool circulation performance.

How Is the Required Sand Amount Determined?

The required media quantity is determined by the filter diameter. As the diameter increases, the amount of silica sand needed also increases. For example, a 900 mm diameter filter typically requires around 450 kg of silica sand. The product is delivered without media; sand or glass media must be supplied separately.

How to Choose a Pool Sand Filter

A practical selection formula is as follows:
Pool volume (m³) / 4 = Required filter flow rate (m³/h)
Example:

  • A 130 m³ pool → 130 / 4 = 32.5 m³/h filtration capacity is required.
  • Filters that match this capacity are available in specific diameters within the Aster series.

Astralpool Aster Laminated Sand Filter offers multiple diameter and flow options suitable for pool volumes ranging from 40 m³ to 130 m³. The appropriate pump selection is determined according to the filter diameter.
Aster series filters can be used safely for many years in both private pools and professional facilities thanks to durable manufacturing technology, high pressure tolerance, and efficient filtration performance.
